Man City 1 West Ham 2: Citizens left in crisis

Manchester City have almost definitely been plunged into crisis after losing 2-1 against West Ham. The Hammers reprised their role as the most bizarre side in the Premier League this season by inflicting upon the leaders their first defeat of the season through goals from Victor Moses and Diafra Sakho. A consolation strike from Kevin De Bruyne on his full debut could not quite rescue City’s unbeaten record, meaning West Ham have now defeated Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City in their first three away games of this campaign, scoring seven goals and conceding just one in the process. Victory leaves Slaven Bilic’s side on 12 points from six games, just three behind City, for whom a second defeat in a week leaves them plunged deep into crisis mode. Manuel Pellegrini’s day started badly as playmaker David Silva was injured in the warm-up and had to be replaced by Jesus Navas. City had an early chance when Adrian punched away a Fernandinho header from a De Bruyne corner but any hopes the hosts had of taking charge were quickly dashed as the defence was caught out. Pellegrini had been forced to change his back four for the first time this season because of injury to captain Vincent Kompany and the reshaped rearguard afforded Moses too much space.

Manchester United revenue down, but Glazers are quids in

Manchester United’s income fell by £38m in 2014-15 due to the team’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, but despite that, the six children of the club’s owner, Malcolm Glazer, stand to earn £15 million from the year.

The five sons and one daughter of Malcolm Glazer will be paid $3.9m (£2.5m) each annually, as the majority shareholders of Manchester United plc, the United holding company.

In the 2014-15 accounts of Manchester United plc, the company announced it will pay a dividend of $0.045 (£0.03) every quarter, for each share owned by a shareholder.

The six Glazer siblings together own approximately 131m shares, 80% of the total issued, according to a spokesman for the club.

Although the club’s revenue was hit by the failure under former manager, David Moyes, to qualify for European football’s elite competition, United’s total income of £395m was still a Premier League record.

The figures show the impact of not playing Champions League football last season for the first time since 1995 and broadcasting and matchday revenue were hardest hit. Broadcasting revenue was down £28.1million to £107.7million, a drop of 20.7 per cent. Matchday revenue was down £17.5million, a fall of 16.2 per cent, to £90.6million.

United’s gross debt rose by 20.2 per cent to £411million, although this is partly down to volatility of the exchange rates.

Better news for United came with the club’s commercial performance, with sponsorship revenues up 14.1 per cent to £154.9million.

With the club back in the Champions League and with a new £750 million kit deal on the books, United are confidently predicting they will become the first English side to break the half-billion-pound mark for revenue for the current financial year.

Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice chairman, claims the results show the club were able to flourish despite missing out on the Champions League and will be much stronger in the next fiscal year.

Bournemouth have no small-club mentality, Callum Wilson tells Sky Sports

Bournemouth are not going into their first Premier League season with a small-club mentality, insists last season’s top scorer, Callum Wilson. Wilson scored 20 goals in the Championship last year as Eddie Howe’s side were promoted as champions, and both the club and the striker will make their Premier League bow against Aston Villa on Saturday. The 23-year-old, who signed from Coventry last summer and signed a new four-year contract last month, says that while he is staying modest ahead of the new campaign, the club will not cower under the pressure.

Manchester City hold talks with Juventus star Paul Pogba

Manchester City have held talks with highly-rated Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, understands Sky Sports Italia.

City’s representatives travelled to Turin to speak to the France international over a potential transfer to the Etihad Stadium.

However, dethroned Premier League champions City face stiff competition as the 22-year-old has also been linked with Paris St Germain, Barcelona, Real Madrid and former club Manchester United.

United signed Pogba from Le Havre in 2009 in a move which enraged the French club but he made only three league appearances from the bench before rejecting a new contract and joining Juventus on a free transfer in July 2012.

The Italian champions are keen to keep Pogba, who is under contract until June 2019, and have slapped a price-tag of a minimum of 100m euros on their prized possession.

City are believed to be the first club to visit northern Italy in their bid to sign Pogba and any deal is likely to involve other players as makeweights.

PSG are reportedly willing to meet Juve’s valuation of the player but the figure is understood to have seen Real Madrid cool their interest.

Barca are currently restrained by a transfer ban imposed by FIFA for 2015, while Juventus team-mate Andrea Pirlo has dismissed the chances of Pogba returning to Old Trafford.

“He seems very happy at Juventus," said Pirlo. "I know he is focused on finishing the season with a lot of success. Whatever the future is for him I don't see it being Manchester United.

“He didn't feel he was treated well there. I know that was under Sir Alex Ferguson and now there is a new coach, but I do not seeing him returning to a club where he was not treated well.”

Pogba, meanwhile, is focused on facing Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg at the Bernabau on Wednesday night.

Chris Ramsey insists he's the man to lead QPR in long term

QPR head coach Chris Ramsey believes he should continue in the hotseat whether the club stay up or go down.

Ramsey has overseen just one victory since he was appointed permanent manager in February but four points from games against Aston Villa and West Brom, and a narrow defeat to Chelsea, have revived hopes of survival.

West Ham's Sam Allardyce and Bournemouth's Eddie Howe have both been linked with Ramsey's job in the summer but the former Tottenham coach believes it would be unfair for his future to depend on Rangers avoiding the drop.

"I wouldn't say I'm expecting the sack (if QPR are relegated) but I've been in the game a long time and you have to be realistic about what generally happens, whether it's fair or not fair," Ramsey said.

"I'm going to say it would be unfair because I'll be shopping in Lidl instead of Waitrose, I'll have a different shopping basket. I have to look at it from my personal point of view. The club have to do the best for their long term and if it's not me, I'd fully support whatever they decided to do.

"But I think it is me. I think the club long-term needs someone like me to have a holistic approach of building the club."

Ramsey worked with Tim Sherwood at Tottenham's academy, nurturing the likes of Harry Kane, Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb, all of whom have thrived at White Hart Lane this season.

Rangers have hung their survival hopes on experienced, and often expensive, signings but Ramsey believes he can carry out the club's wish for a more joined-up strategy.

"I think the chairman wants to go that way because we need to keep that stability at the club for the long term," added Ramsey.

"At Tottenham, it took us nearly a decade to get them where they are, where you could churn out player after player after player to have loads more ready to bolster the squad even if they weren't quite ready.

"At the moment we might only have three or four that could bolster the squad. In order to get that correct development you need to be patient but if you do get it right you set the club up for a long time."

Rangers are two points adrift of safety having played a game more than the three teams above them and Saturday's game at home to West Ham looks crucial given the club's next two fixtures are away to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Ramsey, however, insists he is not feeling the pressure.

"I had more sleepless nights at Tottenham," Ramsey said. "Sometimes it's harder when you're the number two, you want the number one to do so well and you're trying your best to help them.

"At the moment it is just myself and I know exactly what I want. The only thing here is the fans are so fantastic, they have travelled away with us and been brilliant, and I've had quite good dialogue with the owners.

"It's not about sleepless nights, it's more trying to make sure the people around the club have well-deserved success."

West Ham have endured a disappointing second half to the campaign, winning just twice since the turn of the year and slipping to 10th in the table.

Allardyce, whose contract expires in the summer, is not expected to remain at Upton Park next season but Ramsey issued a warning to Hammers fans.

"Sam made a comment if he was called Allerdici he'd get more plaudits and I agree with him," Ramsey said.

"He'd be called a fantastic tactician. They were top half of the table for the first half of the season. If it was the other way round and they'd only moved into the top half now, they'd say he'd been brilliant. So it's only perception. At the end of the day, you have to be careful what you wish for."

No goals in feisty Madrid derby

The goalkeeper made several superb stops, twice denying both Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez as the visitors dominated possession in the opening period and looked to take a lead back to the Bernabeu for the second leg.

Diego Simeone’s men had a couple of chances at the other end as Arda Turan headed wide, but they couldn’t test Iker Casillas in an improved display in a second half which threatened to boil over after Mario Mandzukic came to blows with both Sergio Ramos and Dani Carvajal on separate occasions.

Neither side could find the winner, meanwhile, as Atletico extended their unbeaten run against Real to seven as the draw sets up a fascinating second leg on April 22.

The visitors immediately looked to take the initiative and Bale, fresh on his return to the side, spurned a glorious chance in the first few minutes as he was played clean through, but Oblak closed down the Welshman and kept his curling shot out with a firm hand.

Mandzukic looked to be the main target for Atletico, but their long-ball tactic didn’t suit the striker who seemed to be lacking pace – something demonstrated by Raphael Varane’s ease in catching him despite surrendering a 10-yard headstart.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession but the hosts’ defensive organisation looked like it could frustrate them, and it took until the half-hour mark before Oblak was tested again.

Luka Modric brought down the ball superbly in midfield before laying off for Bale, who turned his man superbly before drilling a low 25-yard effort which the Atletico goalkeeper kept out with a fine stop.

Rodriguez called the Slovenian into action again as he curled an effort with the outside of his left foot, before Modric then fired over with the outside of his right.

The visitors then showed their danger on the counter as Varane raced forward with a devastating run before his ball across the box eventually fell for Rodriguez, who tested Oblak once again, this time with a low shot which the goalkeeper turned away with his left hand.

Simeone clearly targeted the second half as the time to strike, and his side came out for the second half with a lot more drive and determination.

Luis Suarez scored a brilliant second-half winner as Barcelona maintained control of the Spanish title race by beating Real Madrid in a pulsating Clasico.

Cristiano Ronaldo cancelled out an early header from Jeremy Mathieu before Suarez struck to leave the hosts four points clear at the top of La Liga.

Although Barca made the brighter start, Real soon got into the game and had the first big chance when Karim Benzema's cross found Ronaldo unmarked at the far post, but he did not have much angle to work with and could only send his cushioned volley against the crossbar.

Barca then went ahead after Suarez won a free-kick, Lionel Messi swung it into the middle and French centre-back Mathieu arrived unmarked to send a perfectly placed header past the dive of Iker Casillas.

But Real battled quickly back and a dramatic minute saw Suarez's cross-shot present Neymar with a golden chance which he put straight at Casillas, before Real immediately broke and Benzema's brilliant backheel found Ronaldo for a low stabbed finish.
